नई दिल्ली: केंद्र सरकार ने शुक्रवार को 'एक राष्ट्र, एक चुनाव' के प्रस्ताव का अध्ययन करने के लिए एक उच्च स्तरीय पैनल की स्थापना की घोषणा की। पूर्व राष्ट्रपति रामनाथ कोविंद पैनल का नेतृत्व करेंगे और प्रस्ताव पर एक रिपोर्ट प्रस्तुत करेंगे।

यह कदम सरकार द्वारा 18 से 22 सितंबर तक संसद के विशेष सत्र की घोषणा के एक दिन बाद उठाया गया है। विशेष सत्र की घोषणा के तुरंत बाद, 'एक राष्ट्र, एक चुनाव' प्रस्ताव पर अटकलें शुरू हो गईं, इसके बारे में मीडिया के एक वर्ग ने रिपोर्ट किया था कि सत्र के दौरान चर्चा की जा सकती है। प्रस्ताव में देशभर में लोकसभा और विधानसभा चुनाव एक साथ कराने का जिक्र है। भाजपा और प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने कई मौकों पर इस मुद्दे पर बात की है और यह 2014 के लोकसभा चुनावों के लिए पार्टी के घोषणापत्र का भी हिस्सा था। 1967 तक भारत में एक साथ चुनाव कराना आम बात थी और इस तरह से चार चुनाव हुए। 1968-69 में कुछ राज्य विधानसभाओं को समय से पहले भंग कर दिए जाने के बाद यह प्रथा बंद हो गई। पहली बार लोकसभा भी निर्धारित समय से एक साल पहले भंग कर दी गई और 1971 में मध्यावधि चुनाव हुए।
